Collateral Damage
In the military, the word "collateral" is most often associated with damage. Minimizing collateral damage is an important goal of our targeting and weapons systems, and nobody does it better than the U.S. Armed Forces. For veterans who are looking to go into business after their tour of duty, collateral takes on an entirely different meaning.
In the last article, I stressed the importance of good credit, and described how credit plays a vital role in a lending decision process. Another important element is the ability of the borrower to provide collateral, usually defined as a second source of repayment. Here are some examples of collateral, and how it is used by lenders.
